Pre-Conference Workshop – Digital Preservation Basics
As defined by the Library of Congress, digital preservation is the active management of digital content over time to ensure ongoing access. This workshop is tailored to demystify digital preservation, and explain what “active management” entails to ensure long-term access to digital materials. Organized into six short modules, this workshop is geared toward working professional with little to no digital preservation experience. From identifying what digital materials to preserve to storing digital materials in a secure and sustainable way, this workshop will help jumpstart your digital preservation efforts.
Other 2017 Conference Events
Luncheon: On Thursday from noon until 1:30pm we will be having our annual luncheon at the beautiful Stephen D. Lee Home, 316 7th Street North, next door to the Columbus-Lowndes County Public Library. Entrees will include both a meat and a vegetarian option. Attendance is included in the registration fee, but please let us know if you plan to attend on the registration form so we can have an accurate head count.
Library Tours: At 2:00, after the luncheon, and again at 4:00, the Fant Memorial Library and the Billups-Garth Archives at the Columbus-Lowndes County Public Library will be offering a tour of their facilities. Conference goers are encouraged to tour one at 2:00 and another at 4:00, in whichever order they choose.
Tales from the Crypt: High school students at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will perform a reprise of the annual “Tales from the Crypt” performance using archival research conducted in the Columbus-Lowndes County Public Library on the lives of people interred in Friendship Cemetery, a cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places that has been in continual use since 1849. The performance will take place at Friendship Cemetery, on 4th Street South south of MUW campus, at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 27.
Board Meeting: The conference concludes with a meeting of the board of the Society of Mississippi Archivists at noon on Friday, April 28. All members are invited to attend.
The conference hotel is the Fairfield Inn & Suites Columbus for 89.00 USD per night. The Fairfield shares a parking lot with the Courtyard and Hampton Inn and Suites, and there are plenty of other options around town, all a short drive from MUW campus.

There are several on-campus options for food, including the Hogarth Dining Center (a cafeteria setting where MUW and MSMS students eat), a Subway next door, and Simply To Go, a small food kiosk with snacks and drinks in the lobby of Parkinson Hall. Just off-campus is Tampico Bay, a Mexican restaurant, and there are several nice restaurants a pleasant half-mile stroll down historic College Street, including Huck’s Place (southern food), Thai By Thai, Zachary’s (burgers and sandwiches), and Three Sisters Pie Company inside Books and Boards.
