Today, for this new top, video games are still in the spotlight. It may be 2014 for a few days, but retro games are on the rise. We have tried to list genres that are not found much in our time, and to evoke what was best done in the myriad of good games released on various media over the ages !
The PS4, Xbox One and Wii U are the 8th generation of video consoles. Including the PC, these machines will allow to offer ever more beautiful video games. More and more realism is being demanded, but remember: in the early days of video games, simple pixels could delight a child for hours. At the time, we just wanted to have fun with a title that offered a simple gameplay and fight it to the end. We propose today to rediscover ten of them, classified by genre.
Beat Them All 2D and Strider (1989)
You don’t know Strider, or even the second episode ? Other greats of the genre must evoke memories, such as Final Fight, Double Dragon, or Ninja IV Turtles: Turtles in Time.
trider gives you control of Hiryu, a kind of modern-day ninja, and you will have to defeat everything that stands in your way. The game offers a lot of things, the character can hang onto the edges, climb walls, and even get help from PNJ (non-player characters). The concept of the beat Them all retro is well summarized thanks to Strider.
To Beat Them All 2D at the moment, one game comes to mind very quickly: Dragon’s Crown.
This game is the very archetype of everything that has been done on this genre, updated to the taste of the day, and in HD. That’s all !
The Japanese RPG and Chrono Trigger (1995)
Chrono Trigger, a dream team for one game. The mastodonts of the genre have united to make this game a legend. The beginnings of what would become Squaresoft and Enix together. The founder of Final Fantasy, The Director of Dragon Quest, and the character design of Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), that of the very good.
The game, in addition to the arguments of the script, character design, and realization, has exemplary gameplay and novelty for the genre through its multiple ends — a reference not to miss.
The modern era is however very poor in games of this type, many become simple action game, but we were pleasantly surprised by a title at the end of 2013: Bravely Default on 3DS.
The game is a return to the sources perfect. The settings are beautiful, the gameplay with class systems and its music are amazing. To be owned by any fan of the genre.
The Die’n’try platform and Oddworld, Abe’s Odyssey (1997)
The concept of gender is not complicated, you control a character that can perform simple actions like jumping or running. You walk in a level until you finish it and then, bam, you die because it’s the first time you’ve done that. You have to learn each sequence of the game by heart to hope to finish it because its difficulty and the Trafalgar moves put in place by the developers will make you laugh until despair. There are a lot of games like this in the retrogaming, but Oddworld, it’s all kind of with new things.
If it doesn’t mean much to you, it’s the story of this very nice little alien, a little benevolent, who said “Hi”, “follow me”, and who could take control of his enemies. In appearance very funny, it is of an exemplary difficulty and one quickly realizes that it is necessary to be very good and to memorize entire phases of play to see the end.
This kind of game still exists today, many independent platform/reflection games use this principle, like Super Meat Boy, but to represent the genre in 2014, we chose… the same game! Oddworld New’n’tasty, the remake of Abe’s Odyssey, coming for 2014, puts us in the mouth, and that’s no small thing to say.
The 3D platform and Super Mario 64 (1996)
The first 3D Mario is the introduction of a legendary revival to platform games. “It’s a-me, Mario!”, for the first time, Mario expressed himself and one could discover a castle of the Princess Peach truer than nature.
Each level is, in fact, a world in its own right with objectives. Each objective rewarded you with a star, and at the end of your collection, you could finally free the princess from the clutches of King Koopa Bowser. A video game legend!
It is difficult to find a platform game of this style in this generation, many are those who have adopted the format to “Beat’ Em All / Platform”…, so We thought of Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolt. The third episode of the game debuted on N64 and was released on Xbox 360, The Rare studio having been bought by Microsoft.
Despite the somewhat open-world dimension and vehicles, the game is still a good old 3D platform game, with harvest of objects like the stars in Mario to move forward. We appreciate the effort, and we’d like to see more Rare games of that quality in the future. Isn’t that Microsoft ?
The VS Fighting and Fatal Fury (1991)
The old-school consoles gave birth to this genre : the one-on-one combat game, viewed from the side. All with Well-Strung game mechanics. Very good game such Street Fighter II came out at this time, but a support, nicknamed The “Rolls Des Consoles” will have seen more fighting game than any other machine : it is the Neo-Geo. And Fatal Fury is one of his flagship series even before the King Of Fighters.
The game was the flagship series of the SNK series until King Of Fighters, released in 1994. It should be noted, however, that KoF comes straight out of the universe of Garou since it is a question of this episode.
The genre has known ups and downs, between Golden times on Neo-Geo and borne, then more monotonous on PSX console living room. He comes back as number one with Sega’s superb Dreamcast, and falls back with the arrival of the” new ” consoles like the Xbox 360. But Capcom released in 2008 on terminal Street Fighter IV. It will then be adapted on console in 2009, and will win many other versions, until the most recent, still to come : Ultra Street Fighter IV.
Being a big fan of the genre and quite assiduous on my level of play, I could have chosen from the list of good titles released recently, like King of Fighter XIII, or the last iteration of Blazblue. My choice has turned to my preference, but anyway, the VS Fighting is far from being buried!
